Creative writing can be such a joyful and rewarding activity that anyone can enjoy—no experience needed. For beginners, especially, it offers a relaxed and welcoming way to express yourself, tap into your imagination, and have fun with words. A special joy for me as an English teacher more used to the strictures of exams, is that there is no criteria, no expectations, and no exam to pass. You don’t have to be an expert. In fact, the journey often begins with scribbles, half-formed ideas, and the simple pleasure of putting pen to paper.
Writing in a group makes the experience even more enjoyable. Far from being competitive or intimidating, beginner writing groups are warm, friendly spaces where everyone supports each other. There’s no ‘right’ - only pieces of writing that you may or may not want to share or keep or discard at will. The focus will be on exploring, playing with language, and sharing stories if—and only if—you feel like it. It’s perfectly fine to just listen, quietly write, and share a supportive space.
My sessions will be informal and low-key, grab yourself a drink from the BEAM bar and join us to share ideas and gentle encouragement. I’ll provide group prompts and writing exercises which will hopefully spark ideas you might never have thought of on your own, and hearing other people’s stories can be both moving and motivating. Everyone brings their own voice and life experience, and you can share or not as you prefer.
What matters most is the enjoyment of the process. Whether you're recalling memories, inventing characters, or just jotting down thoughts, writing helps you connect with yourself and others in a meaningful way. There’s a special kind of joy in discovering that your words can make someone smile, think, or feel something.
Creative writing isn't about being perfect—it’s about being curious and open. So if you’ve ever thought, I’d like to try writing, now is the perfect time. All you need is a little courage and a willingness to play. The rest will come naturally. I look forward to seeing you at a session!
